My touch sensitive CD players give me much more range than my turntables ever did. Plus they come with on-board effects. Your thoughts?

DJ Magazine news

Future Funk Squad vs Kickflip/FFS vs Kraymon - Cables & Wires/Firewater - En:Vision

Three mighty forces in breakbeat come together on this release. First up, Bob Kickflip joins Glen FFS for a circuitry-referencing slab of digitised tech-funk. The robo vox that intones the track title could be mistaken for a well-known telecommunications company – in fact, there's a TV ad opportunity, guys! 'Firewater' with Kraymon, meanwhile, has been touched up for the '08. A natural James Zabiela offering with its glitchy skittling percussion, driving bass and harmonic nuances, this is a perfect midset absorber.

Bassbin Twins - Woppa/Pigpen - Cool & Deadly

Tayo and Skool Of Thought launch their joint venture into the world of bass, putting their respective heads together to create Cool & Deadly for the low frequency funkers. The first release is by the highly respected Bassbin Twins with 'Woppa'. This has been floating around in record boxes now for over a year and is probably the most interesting breaks record of last year. The half step beats and sustained bass have been giving white people a hard time working out how to dance to it! On the flip 'Pigpen' heads in a more dubstep direction and should keep the east London massive and uni students more than happy into the wee hours. Top release.

John Daly - Solitaire - IRR

The shuffling bass and deep vibes on 'Back It Up' are an adequate representation of John Daly's distinctive sound, but it doesn't compare to 'Solitaire'. A similar, juddering bassline is in use, but this time he highlights his love of prog rock excess. Even though the synths sound like Pink Floyd on a good day, they exude an emotive atmosphere that's the ideal accompaniment to his lopsided rhythms.

Michael Morph - Do What You Want (Deekline Remix) - Pure Mint

The dastardly Deekline nices up the electrobreaks vocal original into a synth-happy booty bass boogiedown. One for the sexier floors.

Laurent Garnier - Going Back to my Roots - Innervisions

It's strange that 'Back' sounds like an update of late '90s tribal San Fran house because the French DJ's roots are in jacking Chicago and Underground Resistance's Detroit techno and electro legacy. 'Panoramix' is closer to Garnier's tastes, an epic composition that features shaking percussion and eerie rave riffs riding a moody Resse bassline for eleven minutes.

Ben & Lex - Meat House/Space Docking - Ape Music

What's this, one of the stalwarts of the breaks scene – Beatz & Bobz ressies Ben & Lex – go house? In truth, aside from the missing kick-drum, you don't really notice on 'Meat House: a warping bad-ass b-line and nasty noises created using breakbeat production techniques pretty much makes it a breakbeat track in all but offbeat. The pulverising 'Space Docking', with its demon burrowing bassline and chopped up breaks, is more breakbeat heartland.

Marc Romboy vs Chelonis R Jones - Helen Cornell (Remixes) - Systematic

Romboy has recruited two of house music's most in-demand producers to rework 'Cornell' – and neither disappoint. 2000 & One's dub is a rolling, linear DJ tool, based on his trademark raw house beats. Meanwhile, Sydenham opts for a more dramatic approach: opening with a ponderous vocal, he plunges into an epic, chord-driven groove that keeps on building.

Karton/Digitalis - Mugstar/Dealing With It - Sound Of Habib

Karton is an Australian DJ/producer well known to all the international jocks playing down under. 'Mugstar' is an early doors slab of acid-funk, peppered with disco/funk samples throughout. Digitalis, on loan from Sinister, turns it into a growly tech-funk beast with assorted glitches and clangs to spice it up. Then in turn Digitalis' 'Dealing With It', with its indie-rock vocal and deep bassline vibe, is put through the acid-funk mangle by Karton to complete the circle.

Quietpoint & XDB - Exile - Ballad Inc

The talented Quietpoint starts off 'High Hopes of Salvation' with just a murky bassline, but ten minutes later he's reached an epic finale, with sweeping chords guided to a dramatic climax by chiming metallic percussion. XDB, meanwhile, opts for a more stripped back approach on the jacking 'Anilem' and the dubby 'Jupit', but here too snippets of outer space FX and glacial pads are audible.

Brommage Dub - Pan Ting EP - Bromma

Jesper Dahlback and Jean Louis Huta revive their Brommage Dub guise for 'Pan Ting', an unusual mixture of dubby techno, belching acid lines and samples of chiming Caribbean steel pans.

Ramirez - Hablando (Remixes) - Hell Yeah

While Hell Yeah's decision not to include the original version is questionable - are they implying it's not on a par with Radioslave's versions? - this release shows that Matt Edwards has elevated remixing to an art form. The first version is slamming and intense, with off-kilter percussion and a vocal snippet creating a woozy, druggy vibe, while the second version, with its dubwise bass, creates a groovier yet equally dark mood.

Beat Assassins feat Ragga Twins & Yolanda - The Hotness - Mofo

After a swirly, oceanic intro the Ragga Twins kick off 'The Hotness' with an inimitable hardcore uproar warcry and an exceedingly rude electronic b-line rasps in. Yolanda soon joins the party with a tuneful silky-turned-ragga chorus hook, and tasty bleeps and keys offset nicely. This is a peak-time wind-yer-waist party anthem that rivals a Deekline & Wizard cut for potency, and should lift the BAs to yet another level. 'Direct Hit' on the flip draws on Ramirez electro-house influences for a companion piece to Krafty's 'Through The Door' last year.

Various Artists - Raw Essentials Part 2 - Raw Elements

Steve Bug revives his '90s label and this second sampler stands out, mainly thanks to Russ Gabriel's slamming, acid-spiralling version of Bug's own 'Honeymoon'.

Brothers Bud - The Sting/Remedy - Finger Lickin'

Blimey, 'The Sting' is another breakbeat cut that uses those Clavia keyboard electro-house sounds popularised by D. Ramirez on this slice of rolling party funk. There's little doubting that electro sounds have had a positive effect on breakbeat in general, but loads of producers seem to have had the same ideas at the same time. Playable, but hardly mould-breaking. 'Remedy' overleaf is little more than an early doors funk tool.

Droido - Doodles EP - Missive

Try heading straight for 'Trystep' on this - a low-end funky treat that fuses a 4x4 percussive beat with filthy sub bass. Techno trippiness warped just right for dubstep floors.

Infadels - Free Things (Alex Metric Remix) - Wall Of Sound

Brilliant atmosphere-building long intro that immediately builds tension to fever pitch before dropping down into noisenik electro glitchness and the full song vibe. The boy Metric can do no wrong.

Scanone/M2J - Bleep 23/Odd Sockz - Yellow Machines

Scanone, aka Bionics, has been hitting the dubstep scene hard with this double-tracker, packed with pummeling beats and bassline pressure. M2J's 'Odd Socks' is already something of a scene fave; its rubbery descending b-line and bouncing breaks spelling floor-friendly mayhem – especially when it hits the breakdown. Scanone's very own 'Bleep 23' is a little darker and technical but no less accessible, charged through with another mighty bass wobble. Made for maximum floor damage.

Kid Blue - Way Back/Ultimate Orange - Fat!

Kid Blue is, of course, the Chew The Fat resident who's picked up the mantle from Paul 'Trouble' Arnold – currently recovering from leukaemia – and helped broaden the Fat! remit somewhat. 'Way Back' utilises brass samples alongside wibbly tech-funk stylings, breaking down into an old skool break with neat stabs to accompany before the b-line snakes to the fore. Genre-traverser. 'Ultimate Orange' is a building, gloopy, trippy stomper that features kooky words courtesy of Britney Spears!

Sleazephonics - Rock Ya Head Top EP - Raw

At just 17 years old, Josh Bartley cites Aphex Twin and Basement Jaxx as two influences and manages to debut with an already accomplished-sounding, individualistic take on dubstep. 'Indian Taboo' fuses smoky eastern flutes with reggae influences that belie the seriously weighty bassline rolling deviously underneath. 'Orchid', meanwhile, is the stand out cut and even harder to pin down – deeper, yet with a nagging bassline and twitching key motif that is truly hypnotic. One to watch.

NAPT - N-Funk Pt1 - Funkatech

NAPT have been moving their sound in a slightly different direction, and they've been making waves with their last couple of releases - this is no different. 'Gotta Have More Cow Bell' comes custom-made with an elasticated electro bassline, lashings of funk and vocal snippets lifted from loads of records from the past. Over on the other side 'Heart Of Stone' ploughs a similar path of funk-drenched elements but the bass gets a bit more prominent and the drums pound with a little extra intensity.
